Parametric Self-Storage Generator — Revit Plugin for Automated Floor Plan Generation

Project Overview

A US-based self-storage developer needed to evaluate multiple site configurations quickly — before committing to full BIM modeling. The ask was simple: can we generate a storage facility layout in Revit by just entering dimensions?

We built a working demo in Revit that does exactly that. Enter width, depth, unit size, and height — and the plugin generates a fully parametric storage facility layout instantly. What used to take a BIM engineer hours of manual modeling now takes under a minute.

The Challenge

Self-storage developers evaluate dozens of site configurations during the pre-design phase. Each variation requires a new floor plan — different total widths, unit sizes, aisle depths, and roof profiles. Doing this manually in Revit means:

• Hours of repetitive modeling for each configuration variant
• No easy way to iterate — every change requires rework from scratch
• Slow decision-making — design decisions blocked by modeling bottlenecks
• High cost for early-stage exploration — full BIM engagement too expensive for pre-design

Our Solution

A parametric Revit plugin that generates a complete self-storage floor plan from a set of input parameters:

• Total Width — overall facility width
• Unit Width — width of a single storage cell (min. 8 ft)
• Depth — total depth of the facility
• Depth Step — column grid module
• Height at Start — roof elevation above the entrance door
• Height at End — roof elevation above the rear wall

The plugin validates inputs and generates the full Revit model geometry in one click — walls, grid, roof profile, and unit layout.

Context

This project was delivered as a proof-of-concept demo to demonstrate Consedge Tech's parametric automation capabilities to a prospective client in the US self-storage sector. It illustrates our ability to scope, prototype, and deliver a working technical demo rapidly — de-risking larger engagements.

Results & Impact

• Pre-design layout generation reduced from hours to under 1 minute
• Client able to evaluate unlimited configuration variants with no BIM rework
• POC delivered and demoed within days of scope agreement
• Demonstrated parametric automation capabilities that directly support sales engagement
