Phase Bridge 4D — Construction Phasing Plugin for Revit & Navisworks

Project Overview

4D BIM — connecting a 3D model to a construction schedule — is one of the most powerful coordination tools in modern AEC. But making it work in practice has always required manual, error-prone data handoffs between Revit and Navisworks.

Phase Bridge 4D eliminates that gap. It's a dual-plugin system (Revit + Navisworks) that lets teams define construction phases directly in the model, export structured data, and automatically assign schedule tasks to model elements in Navisworks — all without manual mapping.

The Challenge

4D simulation in Navisworks requires assigning schedule tasks to specific model elements. The standard workflow is fragmented:

  • No native connection between Revit phases and Navisworks TimeLiner tasks
  • Manual data entry — teams export element lists and map tasks by hand, which is slow and prone to error
  • No standardized parameter — every team uses different conventions for tracking phase assignments
  • Re-work on every model update — any change in Revit requires redoing the Navisworks task assignments from scratch

Our Solution

Phase Bridge 4D creates a structured, repeatable pipeline between Revit and Navisworks:

Revit Plugin:

  • Dedicated "PhaseBridge 4D" tab directly in the Revit ribbon
  • Visual phase management UI — assign elements to phases with Task ID, Group, Phase Name, Process type, and dates
  • Supports Construct, Demolish, and Temporary process types (aligned with Navisworks defaults)
  • Writes a project parameter PB_Phase to all assigned elements — persistent, model-embedded data
  • Export phases list to CSV for Navisworks import
  • Import/export CSV for team collaboration and version control

Navisworks Plugin:

  • Reads the CSV exported from Revit
  • Automatically assigns elements to TimeLiner tasks based on PB_Phase values
  • No manual selection or mapping required — fully automated task attachment

Results & Impact

  • Eliminated manual element-to-task mapping in Navisworks TimeLiner
  • Standardized 4D phase data via shared PB_Phase parameter across the entire team
  • Repeatable pipeline — model updates require only re-export + re-run, not full rework
  • Supports full 4D simulation lifecycle: construction, demolition, and temporary works
  • Structured CSV format enables version control and team collaboration on phase data
